Chapter 3—ENGINE MAINTENANCEFigure 3-8.—Figure Removed.gears. The valve packing nut should be kept onlyfinger tight and should be lubricated occasionallywith a drop of oil. Should it become necessaryto renew the packing, you will need to remove thenut, take out the packing gland, clean the stuff-ing box, and repack it with asbestos wickingsaturated with oil.Should the temperature of the freshwaterleaving the engine be too high when the regulatoris set on the lowest adjustment setting you shoulddo the following:1. Ensure that the manual pointer is set at theTHERMOSTATIC position.2. Ensure that the packing gland is notbinding the valve stem and that the valve stem isnot stuck in the COOLER CLOSED (minimumcooling) position.3. Check the water lines for other causes ofthe difficulty. If this check does not reveal thecause of the trouble, it is probable that thetemperature control element is inoperative, andthat it should be checked. If undercooling occurs when the temperatureregulator is set on the highest adjustment setting, check for a sticking valve in the BY-PASSCLOSED (maximum cooling) position. Stickingmay be caused by a tight stuffing box or by dirtunder the lower valve seat. If the temperature atthe bulb is lower than the set temperature and thevalve position indicator shows COOLER3-9
