A removable fuel burner, mountedinside the kettle outer shell, provides heat to the meltingtank through a baffle. A flue stack located on theforward end of the melting tank over the top of the baffleand burner assembly, provides an escape for exhaustgases. A thermometer, inserted through an insulatedpipe into the interior of the melting tank indicates thetemperature reading of the bituminous material beingheated. When the bituminous material is overheated, afire or explosion can result.A two-cylinder gasoline engine provides power forthe bitumen pumping system. When you shift the clutchshifter lever, the engine is engaged to the pumpassembly that provides the pressure for all pumpingoperations.A flexible, metal spray hose, whichconnects the pump to the hand-held spray bar assembly,is used to convey bitumen to the surface being repaired.SAFETY PRECAUTIONSSafety precautions for the distributor truck andasphalt kettle operations are as follows:. Always have dry chemical type of extinguishersavailable and in good condition.l Check all body mounting tie-downs andfasteners. On trailer units, check kingpin plate fastenersand all suspension and running gear components.. Lighted cigarettes or other sources of combustionmust be kept clear of open manholes or overflow ventsto reduce fire hazards.l Sparks from the engine exhaust can be for theignition of volatile gases.. Remain clear of rotating drives when the unit is inoperation to prevent becoming entangled in the machine.c Use goggles and gloves or insulated materialwhen handling the spray bar, sections, or hoses toprevent burns.. Monthly, check (and if necessary clean) the3-inch overflow tube to ensure that the tube is notclogged.l Open a manhole slowly to relieve any pressurethat may exist in the tank.. Check and ensure that all pipe and hoseconnections are secure before operating valves toeliminate leaks (that may spray hot bitumen on otherpersonnel).l Keep the unit clean for safety and operation.16-32
