connected to the OD box. The scale platform holds thefeedback potentiometer and local pitch indicator, asshown in views A and B of figure 3-10. This indicatoris defined as temperature compensated because theindicator arm is connected to the prairie air tube. Lookat view B. The prairie air tube is normally pressurizedwith air at a controlled temperature, and will have a fixedamount of thermal growth. Hence, the indicator arm isprovided with a thermally stable (temperature-compensated) surface, a primary means to sense andindicate propeller pitch, and a means to relay thatinformation to the machinery control system (MCS).Electronic Pitch Indicator System.— In additionto the temperature-compensated pitch indicatorinstalled on the OD box of DDG-51 class ships, anelectronic pitch position transducer is installed behind aFigure 3-10.—Pitch scale platform showing temperature-compensated pitch indicating system.3-14
