INSTALLATION - Continued
CAUTION
Cylinder head is heated so that it expands, allowing the valve seat inserts to go in without
damaging the cylinder head. It will be necessary to heat the cylinder head more than once
to complete installation of all 16 valve seat inserts. Failure to comply may result in damage
to cylinder head.
11.
Using replacing tool and hammer, drive inserts (Figure 1, Item 1) into cylinder head (Figure 1, Item 3).
12.
Using cleaning cloth and cleaner, wipe valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
13.
Using cleaning cloth, dry valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
14.
Install pilot tool from adapter kit in cylinder head (Figure 1, Item 3).
CAUTION
At no time during valve grinding process should the grinding stone contact the cylinder
head casting. If grinding stone contacts cylinder head casting, the valve seat is
unserviceable and must be replaced prior to proceeding. Failure to comply may result in
damage to cylinder head casting.
15.
Using a valve seat grinder and 31 degree grinding wheel from adapter kit, apply a 31 degree bevel on valve
seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
16.
Using cleaning cloth and cleaner, wipe valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
17.
Using cleaning cloth, dry valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
18.
Using valve seat grinder and 60 degree grinding wheel from adapter kit, apply a 60 degree bevel on inside
of valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
19.
Using cleaning cloth and cleaner, wipe valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
20.
Using cleaning cloth, dry valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
21.
Using valve seat grinder and 15 degree grinding wheel from adapter kit, apply a 15 degree bevel on outside
of valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
22.
Using cleaning cloth and cleaner, wipe valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
23.
Using cleaning cloth, dry valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1).
24.
Remove pilot from cylinder head (Figure 1, Item 3).
25.
Using valve seat dial gage, check concentricity of valve seat insert (Figure 1, Item 1). Total run-out allowed
is 0.002 in. (0.005 cm).
26.
If total run-out exceeds 0.002 in. (0.005 cm), check for worn or damaged valve guides.
27.
If valve guides are serviceable, regrind valve seat inserts (Figure 1, Item 1).
28.
Dispose of contaminated cleaning and drying cloths in accordance with local procedures.
